Mystery solved
We found a break in the fence. There is a tree right in the corner of the front garden and its trunk was hiding the fact that the fence post and a fence slat had been damaged and pushed out as the tree had grown. We figure poor Alice probably chased a monkey who was checking on the status of some ripening bananas we have growing. She must have got stuck...struggled, ended up still (thank goodness) in our garden but scratched and torn and with a broken leg. All the plants in that area had been trampled down. We feel so badly for her...she and her sister a such sweet dogs. If she hadn't been so chunky she would have managed to get through but I am relieved that she didn't. We now figure this is where Molly also had gone through in the past, although we could never find out how!

Well done Sylvia... you have made a start. You mentioned to me in an email that Alice is trying to pull at the bandage. Have you tried a buster collar on her? That should stop her, especially as it's her front leg.
